Our 2018-2019 Profile

Founded in 1954, Shawe Memorial is a co-educational Catholic school for grades 7-12.  Shawe is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.  It is through students, parents, faculty, and administration that Shawe Memorial continues the tradition of excellence in Catholic education.  Today, Shawe Memorial offers a

quality education to 175 students from Madison, Jefferson County and surrounding communities.

Our Mission

Shawe Memorial and Pope John, as Prince of Peace Schools, provide a quality education based on Catholic values and traditions in a safe and nurturing environment.  We welcome all children and encourage family involvement to help students reach their potential while serving God and others.




Shawe Memorial was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2006.

Shawe Memorial is accredited by the Indiana Department of Education (first class) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Graduation Requirements

Shawe Memorial High School students must earn a minimum of 48 credits and pass the End-of-Course Assessments for Algebra I and English 10 to earn an Indiana high school diploma.

Indiana Core 40 Diploma: 48 Credits

Religion:  1 credit per semester

English: 8 credits

Mathematics:  6 credits; 8 credits (beginning with

class of 2016)

Science:  6 Credits

Social Studies: 6 Credits

Health: 1 Credit

Physical Education: 2 credits

Directed Electives: 5 credits

Other Electives: 6 credits


Academic Honors Diploma: 55 Credits

In addition to Core 40 requirements

Mathematics: 2 credits

Directed Electives:

     World Language: 6 - 8 credits

     Fine Arts:  2 credits

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Shawe Memorial offers a variety of activities that assist in the formation of well-rounded students. These include Religious Retreats, Service In God’s Name (SIGN), Student Publications, Peer Mentors, Peer Tutors, National Junior Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Student Council, Mayor’s Youth Council, Model United Nations, Student Leadership Program, Pep Band, Marching Band, Theatre, French Club, Spanish Club, Spell Bowl, Book Club, Writing Club, Chess Club, Pep Club, National Geographic Bee, Junior Division Academic Super Bowl, Senior Division Academic Super Bowl, trips to countries outside the U.S., and class trips in grades 8 (Washington,D.C.) and grade 10 (Camp Joy).


Shawe Memorial also offers opportunities to participate in the following athletic teams: cross-country, soccer, tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, golf, track & field, baseball and softball.
